Obviously, there had to be a sequel to one of 1999's biggest pictures. Yet, director Stephen Sommers demanded that the budget of the film be bigger - more action, more effects, more locations. More anything? More everything! Yet, that's not always the best choice, as shown by this mildly entertaining, though rather overloaded sequel that reunites the first film's main characters. The opening introduces us to the Scorpion King (wrestler The Rock, who brings a solid presence to a character that doesn't have much to do in the movie), the leader of a powerful army that makes a deal with a powerful spirit to rise up once again after the battles begin to go less and less well. The only problem for the King is that once things are wrapped up, he's banished by the same spirit that brought him back.

The final moments of the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, "Return of the King" is the biggest film; whether it's the best is really not a question that needs to be asked - simply because this series continues to be such a monumental cinematic achievement that picking a "best" of the three seems silly. The film picks up where "The Two Towers" left off; Frodo (Elijah Wood) and Sam (Sean Astin), and the creature Gollum (Andy Serkis) are approaching the dark land of Mordor, to destroy the ring in Mount Doom. However, the ring is starting to have grave effects on Frodo. The two hobbits also continue to have doubts about whether their new friend is friend or foe.

Meanwhile, Gandalf (Ian McKellen), Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), Ghimli (John-Rhys Davies) and Legolas (Orlando Bloom) have reunited with friends Merry and Pippin (Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd). The reunion doesn't last long, however, as a mistake on Pippin's part leads him to join Gandalf in the journey to Midas Tirith to warn the city of armies planning an approach. Elsewhere, Aragorn begins to learn of his fate - he is to be the new king.

There is no doubt that the third in the trilogy is the biggest and most epic of the three: there seems to have been no expense spared in creating some of the most remarkable battle scenes that have ever been seen on film, while the film also has the longest running time of the three. The battle scenes take things to another level beyond that seen previously in "Helm's Deep". While the rain and gloom of the "Helm's Deep" scenes added an unforgettable sense of dread to those scenes, the siege of Minas Tirith and the battle of Pelenor Fields here are visually breathtaking, with giant creatures and spectacularly choreographed action. Some of the finer moments of "Return of the King", however, are not the flashiest or most spectacular: a scene where two cities communicate with each other by a series of lit fires across the mountaintops.

While the film is superb in many ways, there are a series of minor faults to the film. While the final scenes are remarkably moving, there are a few "curtain call"-ish moments with the characters saying goodbye. It's not necessarily a wrong choice, but there's a couple of scenes (one having Frodo name each of the characters as they arrive) that grind these moments to a halt. As for the opening, Jackson could have skimmed a little bit of the introductory moments and gotten into the meat of the story a little faster. While the film moves at a pretty remarkable clip for a film running 3+ hours, there are still a few moments here-and-there that feel slightly excessive.

There are also a few little character issues, too: while Miranda Otto's performance as Eowen is terrific, Jackson sort of goes into a "love triangle" between Eowen, Aragorn and Liv Tyler's Arowen, but leaves it in a way that kind of kicks Eowen out of the picture. Tyler's performance is good, but I continue to feel that the character might seem a tad more fully realized if she'd had a couple more scenes. While Austin's Sam has a larger role here, he is believable as a great friend; once the character becomes something of a warrior later on, it's a little much.

Once again, the performances are terrific. Mortensen's performance is even more dynamic than in the previous films. Although Wood seemed a questionable choice when the trilogy was announced quite a few years ago, he's been excellent as Frodo and this film, where he must show the burden of the ring, offers his finest hour. The heroics of Austin's character become a little much, but his quest to aid his friend results in some of the most moving moments of the film's second half. While I thought Bloom really didn't fit into "Troy", his performance here is swift and smart. McKellen is, as always, outstanding. The supporting roles are all extremely well-played, too.

I'm pretty sad to see these films come to an end - not just because I've grown to enjoy watching the journies of these characters for three films and two (soon to be 3) extended editions of said films - but also because there hasn't been anything this ambitious in cinema in years.

This "Extended Edition" of "Return of the King" adds in a large amount of footage - 50 minutes of fully-produced sequences, complete with new score by composer Howard Shore. For those unfamiliar with my reviews of the extended editions of the other two "Lord of the Rings" movies, I did appreciate the additional footage - it especially made "Fellowship of the Ring" more satisfying. The most noticable change in the movie occurs fairly early on, with a sequence that shows the end of Saruman. While it's a pretty elaborate sequence, it doesn't quite work as well as it should have. It's a nice edition and it fills out the story elements a bit, but I can see why it wasn't included in the theatrical release. We also see more of Éowyn (Miranda Otto), Faramir (David Wenham), how Aragorn and the ghost army boarded the boats before coming to the rescue (instead of just arriving, like the theatrical edition) and a scene late with the Mouth of Sauron.

The story goes that she can't go in the light, and if you wake up and see her, she'll kill you. The usual saying is "Don't Peek." Well, there is a boy named Kyle who gets a warning from his friend Caitlin to not peek. Well, he wakes up on the night when the Tooth Fairy is supposed to come and get his last tooth and sees her. It all leads to more tragedy and the movie jumps to 12 years later. Now grown up, Caitlin (Emma Caulfield) calls Kyle (Chaney Kley) because her little brother Michael (Lee Cormie) is going through the same things he did as a boy, and wants his help. Kyle goes back to Darkness Falls to face his past, and the woman in the porcelain mask (aka the Tooth Fairy).

Review:

At the tail-end of World War II, Choi Bae-dal is a young Korean man who longs to be able to fly fighter planes. Stowing away to Japan in order to join their air force, Bae-dal's first experience of the country is when a con-man tries to steal his money. Bae-dal discovers that the man is a fellow Korean called Chun-bae (Jeong Tae-woo), who has survived the harsh treatment of Koreans in Japan by turning to petty crime. With their different motives: Bae-dal driven by desire for action and Chun-bae needing to escape from some gangsters, the two Koreans stow away in a truck to the air force training camp.

The commander in charge of the camp is a pompous imperialist called Kato (Kato Masaya). Having mistreated the two Koreans, he is amused by Bae-dal's fighting spirit and says that if Bae-dal can beat him with his inferior "foreign" fighting style, he will release them. The two men fight with Kato easily defeating Bae-dal, but an American attack on the airforce base allows Bae-dal and Chun-bae to escape.

Later, Bae-dal is found helping Chun-bae to run a pachinko stall in a Japanese market place. When local gangsters try to take protection money from Chun-bae, Bae-dal tries to defend him but is beaten up and humiliated by the gangsters. His ordeal is ended by the intervantion of Bum-soo (Jung Doo-hong), a martial arts expert from his home town who had also emigrated to Japan. Bum-soo invites Bae-dal back to the circus where he, and many fellow Korean immigrants, work and where he is attempting to build a decent standard of living for his countrymen. After some persuasion, he agrees to teach Bae-dal some of his more sophisticated fighting style.

Meanwhile, Bae-dal has taken to working as a rickshaw driver, honing his fighting skills by defending Japanese women from the rapacious advances of American servicemen. His success at protecting the women makes him something of a local hero, although his real identity is not known. One of the women he protects is the beautiful Yoko (Aya Hirayama), with whom he strikes up a romantic relationship.

When Bum-soo is killed by local gangsters, the Koreans from the compound vow revenge and attack the Japanese gangs. The fight ends abruptly for Bae-dal when he is knocked unconscious by a blow to the head. Bae-dal, vowing to never again lose a fight, retreats to the mountains where, living in his karate gi, he trains day and night; running in the mountains, lifting tree trunks and using makeshift training equipment to harden his body and fighting spirit through austerity.

Returning from the mountains, Bae-dal takes a Japanese name: Masutatsu Oyama, and sets about challenging the best fighters Japan has to offer. Wearing his ragged karate gi and looking like a cave-man with his unkempt appearance, Oyama challenges the first dojo he passes. He defeats every fighter in the dojo - often with only a single strike.

As word of his notoriety spreads, Oyama's actions come to the attention of the head of the Japan Karate Association - the former Air Force camp commander Kato. Kato is hugely offended that a foreigner would not only try to learn Japanese martial arts, but would consider himself worthy to beat Japanese fighters. Nevertheless, Oyama continues to defeat every fighter that Japan has to offer, including competitors in karate, judo, ninjutsu and kobudo, becoming a sensation in the Japanese media. Oyama explains to Yoko that, although he is scared of dying, he is more scared of living as a cripple, and this is why he is willing to sacrifice anything to win.

When the organization sends one of his followers to challenge and kill Oyama, the agent is instead killed by Oyama. Learning that the man he killed had a wife and family, Oyama feels a great deal of guilt for his actions and tracks down the family to apologise and offer to work for them to make up for killing the father of the household. Although initially angry and unaccepting of Oyama's offer, he eventually convinces them that he is a man of honour and not a violent thug.

Returning to the city, Oyama finds that Kato's martial arts association has threatened his own family and demanded a challenge between Kato and Oyama. Dressing in his weathered gi once again, Oyama treks out to the countryside location where Kato is wating for him. Easily defeating Kato's henchmen, Oyama then faces a final showdown with Kato himself. Although it is clear that Kato would like to see Oyama dead, Oyama shows mercy to Kato, defeating him in combat but not killing him.

At the end of the movie, Oyama fights with a bull and wins by breaking one of the bull's horns.

t's interesting to see the resurgence in comic book movies, after many thought that director Joel Schumacher single-handedly ruined the "Batman" franchise with the one-two punch of "Batman Forever" and "Batman and Robin". "X-Men" was enough of a hit to renew interest in the genre, which was followed by development of such characters as "Daredevil" (who will be played by Ben Affleck) and "Spider Man", which finally emerged out of development hell after a lengthy battle over rights and several screenplay treatments, including some work by James Cameron.

After a lengthy discussion over stars (Heath Ledger and, shockingly, Freddie Prinze, Jr. were in the running) and directors (Sam Raimi was a terrific eventual choice), the film was set. Expertly marketed to not really overhype it all, the final film is certainly a good one, in my opinion. There's just a few things about it that keep it from swinging over from very good to excellent.

I'd most certainly call the opening half the better of the two. We're introduced to Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire), an intelligent, aspiring photographer who also happens to be on the low end of the status ladder of high school. He's fallen for the girl-next-door Mary Jane ("M.J.") Watson (Kirsten Dunst), but doesn't know how to express his feelings; he also happens to get beaten-up by the local bullies.

On a field trip to a science experiment at a local university, Peter gets a pretty nasty bite from a genetically modified spider, causing him to fall ill and pass out once he gets home. When he wakes up, things have changed drastically; he can climb walls, has incredible reflexes, can sense danger and can shoot webs. There are a few scenes early on where Maguire hits perfect, goofy notes trying to figure out how these new powers work.

After a tragic event, Peter decides to use his powers to fight crime, riding the streets of criminals large and small by swooping in on them unexpectedly. Elsewhere, industrialist Norman Osborne (Willem Dafoe), the father of Peter's friend Harry (James Franco) takes an overdose of an experiment he was working on, giving him super strength and a second, far darker personality, eventually becoming the Green Goblin, Spider Man's villian in this particular picture (who knows which of many bad guys in the series will be chosen for the sequel).

There's a lot to like about this picture, which entertains and adds a little more character depth than viewers usually find in a Summer movie. Director Raimi, who has been consistently moving up and showing great talent with smaller character-driven dramas like "Simple Plan" and "The Gift", alternates between exhilarating action sequences and character moments. Maguire and Dunst take several sequences that are mainly dialogue-driven and through expressions and other subtle touches, make their unspoken romance believable and their characters sympathetic. Maguire was a perfect choice, easily moving from awkward to serious to subdued.

The one character element that didn't work for me was Dafoe's Green Goblin. While the actor certainly gives it an over-the-top try, the character as written here doesn't make for a particularly interesting villian. The Goblin's mask, which looks like it could have been picked up at a Halloween store, doesn't really help matters, either.

The film's special effects are quite good, as one would probably expect from a picture with a reported 120 million dollar budget. While a few scenes here and there don't look seamless, there are several remarkable shots of Spider Man flying through the streets of Manhattan that are dazzling. Speaking of visuals, it's interesting to see how Raimi's visual style has changed over the years, from the highly inventive camera work of Bill Pope in "Army of Darkness" (Raimi's "Darkness"/"Evil Dead") star Bruce Campbell has a cameo) to Dante Spinotti's stylish and fast-paced work for "Quick and the Dead" to the picture-perfect baseball scenes by John Bailey in "For Love Of the Game". For "Spider Man", Raimi has borrowed director Robert Zemeckis's usual cinematographer, Don Burgess ("Cast Away") and the result is a film with slick, attractive visuals that either remain subdued for quiet moments or follow the rapid action clearly.

Certainly, this is a very good film and one of the stronger "Summer" movies that I've seen in a couple of years. There are some concerns I had; the first half feels more fresh and energetic to the somewhat familiar and louder second half and the villian could have been stronger, but other than that, I was certainly entertained.

I'm now on my fourth or fifth viewing of director Doug Liman's "The Bourne Identity", and each time, I find myself gaining greater appreciation for this carefully constructed and well-acted thriller. A troubled production that went over budget and over schedule, the film was originally supposed to be released late in 2001, but was bumped up to Summer 2002. Reportedly, there were a few different endings filmed and additional debate between director Doug Liman and the studio. Maybe the studio was looking for slick action fare, but Liman and company got it right - this is the first big-budget action picture that almost has an art-house sensibility at times. While Tony Scott can make a picture like this suspenseful from being techno-driven and sleek, Liman goes the other route - the ground-level, often subtle feel of the picture suggests danger can be anywhere, which makes for a more tense experience. The film's drawn-out, quiet introductions to two major action sequences still thrill as if I'd viewed them for the first time.

The film stars Matt Damon (an unlikely action hero if there ever was one, but surprisingly very good) as Jason Bourne, a CIA assassin who, as the movie opens, is found floating in the middle of the ocean with two gunshot wounds. Picked up by a fishing boat, Bourne doesn't remember who he is or how he got there, but his reflexes and abilities suggest something fierce.

Eventually, Bourne realizes that someone - namely his boss, CIA officer Ted Conklin (Chris Cooper), who wants to, without giving away much detail, clean up a mess that Bourne was involved in. Bourne meets up with Marie (Franka Potente of "Run Lola Run") and offers her 20,000 dollars to drive him to what appears to be his Paris apartment. That's the set-up - and credited writers Tony Gilroy and William Blake Herron (based on the novel by Robert Ludlum) provide enough character detail to stay interested and enough solid action sequences - including a wonderfully filmed car chase - to keep suspense high.

In my original review, I discussed the one issue I have with the picture. While I don't feel quite as intensely about it now, it still bothers me. As incredibly good an actor as Chris Cooper is (see "Adaptation", in theaters now), the scenes at the CIA headquarters really never come together that well, as Cooper tries as best he can to liven up some lines that seem cliched at times. On the other hand, I very much enjoyed the dialogue between Damon's Bourne and Potente's Marie; they have great chemistry together and even a few very funny moments. Damon is an unlikely choice as Bourne, but the resulting performance from the actor is marvelous, involving the audience in learning about the character's mysterious past as the character is learning more facts. Potente is excellent, while Brian Cox and Julia Stiles lend solid support.

Director Liman has also served as the cinematographer on his other two productions, "Swingers" and "Go". His camera work was often terrific, launching the viewer into the middle of the sequence with a "you-are-there" feel and good handheld work. Understandably, Universal probably wasn't keen on a formerly independent director also doing the cinematography on a 60 million dollar feature. For "Bourne", cinematographer Oliver Wood ("u-571") (the film also offers additional photography by Don Burgess ("Cast Away") and Dan Mindel ("Spy Game", according to the Internet Movie Database) does equally fine work, often bringing that same "you-are-there" feel to this larger production. Rather than slick shots from a distance, "Bourne"'s street-level cinematography effectively captures the film's feeling that Bourne's persuers could come from behind any corner at any moment. When not returning to the government scenes, the film gains a remarkable amount of tension.

I'm sure that this film does not stay faithful to the book (reportedly, the film takes only some basic threads and goes from there, but I'm not sure, as I never read it and only recently have started in on a used copy of "Bourne Supremacy"), but I really found it very entertaining on its own. Liman's "Go" remains one of my favorite pictures from the past few years and the director has successfully brought the fast-paced, exciting feel of that film to this big-budget feature. One of last year's best and one of the finest thrillers in recent years.

Failure to comply means the murder of Jack's family. Stanfield realizes this will implicate him as an embezzler but he complies. However, even after Cox has the money, it becomes obvious that he had no intention of letting anyone live and kidnaps the family to kill them & hide their bodies, leaving one of his henchman to eliminate Jack. When Jack kills the thug who was supposed to kill him, the sociopathic Cox's plans are ruined. Jack must race against time to get his family back before Cox and his fellow thugs carry out their murderous plans.

A serial killer that is after them because of an accident that they caused last Halloween. A serial killer that seems to have come out of every other scary movie. The body count's already started with Drew Decker (Carmen Electra), the local town slut, and it's starting to build up. The friends are going to have to escape from both the killer's clutches and annoying news reporter Gail Hailstorm (Cheri Oteri) if they plan on living to the sequel...

VIDEO: "Scary Movie" gets a fine presentation from Miramax in the film's original 2.35:1 aspect ratio. Sharpness is a little bit varied throughout the movie - most scenes look sharp and clear, although there are some occasions where the movie falls off into looking slightly soft. Colors are rich and well-saturated with no faults, and flesh tones look accurate and natural.

Aside from a little bit of softness at times, there isn't too much else to complain about. There is a slight amount of pixelation during a couple of brief instances, but it's not too distracting. Shimmering appears lightly once or twice, and the print is clear and clean of flaws. Overall, this is an enjoyable looking presentation, but it isn't without some minor problems.

Chaos starts as soon as Cindy arrives and meets the creepy caretaker (Chris Elliot) with the funny hand. But the house has some deep dark secrets that the group has to solve, even if they are scary or disgusting.

It was rather funny, as to be expected the jokes were hit and miss with there being more hits than misses for me. I thought once again it could have been funnier and there were some unnecessary jokes, but all in all it was a rather funny flick. This one actually plays like a sequel as characters from the previous flick are explained why they aren't here rather than just being ignored all together. For this one the required viewing or basic knowledge of a movie that you need for this one is mainly "Saw", "The Grudge", "The Village", "Million Dollar Baby", and for me the best one "War of the Worlds" (a movie that needed some fun poked at it). There is also something in there making a bit of fun of a movie pretty much you don't need to have seen are know all that much about...you will get it as long as you watch a bit of television. The "War of the Worlds" to me seems to be the main film parodied, however the other films get their fair share of the jokes as well. The opening is rather funny with Shaq and Dr. Phil doing a "Saw" recreation and there are other celebrities who make short visits as well however it is still the same group who forms the core of the cast. Worth a look see, however, if you did not care for "Scary Movie 3" I would say you probably won't like this one.

Review: "Luck ain't nothin' but karma in work clothes," says an ex-con and small-time hood known to everyone as Lucky. That sounds like another karma-conscious bottom-feeder named Earl, but with flashier clothes and jewelry. And swagger. Like his TV counterpart, this direct-to-DVD anti-hero wants to go straight. The thing is, when you have connections like he does and everybody recognizes you as a former "playa," that's not the easiest thing to do.

That's the starting point for "Hard Luck," which stars Wesley Snipes as the main character. This Mario Van Peebles ("Baadassss!") directed film follows Lucky as he gets roped into going to a birthday party for a mob boss he used to "play" with, and it turns out to have been a set-up involving dirty cops, dirty money, and a dirty escape. When Lucky commandeers the flashy mustang owned by one of the club's pole dancers and drags her along for the ride, with the cash, it leads them all the way to another genre: the slasher picture.

Really, though, that's about the only thing that's interesting in this otherwise paint-by-numbers film that offers nothing new and nothing much that comes close to the unexpected. The thumping theme music is here, the flying bullets, the macho posturing, the stereotypic gay-in-power, mob boss, bad cops, and stooges, the stripper who's "not easy," and the obligatory skin shots from that pole dancer named Angela (Jackie Quinones).

What makes the film interesting is also what makes the film silly. Cybill Shepherd and James Liao play a pair of psycho lovers who get turned on mostly when they capture a woman or a couple and take her/them back to their lake retreat, where they strip them down and play games that seem like a cross between a virtual reality music video and a Nazi scientist's experiments. "Hard Luck" is rated R for violence, sexual content, language, and aberrant behavior—the latter because of these goofy fetishists. But the interesting thing is that just when Lucky thinks his life couldn't take a turn for the worst, he and the pole dancer end up in an isolated cabin with a broken down car just like a couple of hapless teens in a slasher picture.

"Hard Luck" has the sheen of a low-budget film, with a kind of plasticity that coats everything and an over-reliance on gimmicks like colored lights and briefly sped-up sequences. There's not much to say about it except that you've seen it before at least a hundred times, if it weren't for that kinky crossover into another genre.

Meanwhile, two of the twins' friends also spin off in diverse directions: Precocious Malee (Zoe Weizenbaum) becomes fixated on a troubled construction worker (Jeremy Renner, North Country), while overweight Leonard (Jesse Camacho) obsesses on losing weight and forcing his obese family to lose weight as well. 12 and Holding moves fluidly between these three stories, gradually building an emotional intimacy with the characters that is unsettling, sad, and finally rewarding. The movie hits a few false notes, but the vast majority of the scenes feel vivid and honest, much like director Michael Cuesta's previous film, L.I.E.. Both the adults (including Annabella Sciorra, Jungle Fever) and the kids give excellent performances; Renner's wrenching turn stands out, but the entire cast makes this a memorable and complex film.
